Urban farming is coming to life in Yangon — and it’s social too. Yesterday, FarmBiz had their first networking event at their farm and ”showcase”; their business idea is to help and inspire others to start chemical free farms in Myanmar. Cool initiative! Next time we hope to have a table there and share ourContinue reading “Urban farming at best”

Chemical free in Yangon
Some photos from the gathering at FarmBiz yesterday, an urban farm in suburban Yangon. They grow really healthy, chemical-free vegetables and are on a mission to inspire others to start farming the organic way around the country. Fresh and healthy, but beautiful too. We really like this farm! /Jenny #bokashimyanmar #urbanfarm #yangon
Even trash has a value
Recycling, Myanmar style. This is over the river on the Dala side of Yangon. Hard to get a grip on it all, but many people are involved in collecting, sorting and reselling trash. Some things, like glass and PET bottles have a value of sorts. Heaps of other stuff doesn’t. Soft plastic especially. Organic wasteContinue reading “Even trash has a value”
Sea of trash
Like so many other countries, Myanmar is drowning in a sea of trash. Where we think we can add something is finding ways to help people sort the organic from the non-organic. The solutions are totally different — plastic needs to be collected, recycled, and in worst case taken to landfill. But organic waste isContinue reading “Sea of trash”
Peanut patch
So in a burst of holiday spirit we took ourselves off to visit the famous teak bridge outside Mandalay. And sure enough we managed to climb off it and down into a peanut farm. Well, just a field really, on a sandbank in the middle of the river. Lucky we had some experts with us…Continue reading “Peanut patch”
Telling the story
Diana is our team photographer and filmmaker. She has a tough job getting us to behave but with true German perseverance she is putting together some great footage of our project. We’re hoping the short films she’s making will help us tell our story — both to spread the bokashi message in Myanmar and outContinue reading “Telling the story”
Chemical-free pharmaceuticals
We visited this totally inspiring organic pharmaceutical farm last week. They use EM and bokashi and any number of smart organic solutions on their farm. Highly recommended if you’re in Pyin Oo Lwin. #bokashimyanmar #famepharmaceuticals #biologynotchemistry
Banana tree mulch
It was the end of the day and the mosquitos were coming, but this thing about banana tree trunks was interesting. Trash, they said. No way, we said. Let’s pull this apart and have a look. No question, this stuff would make perfect mulch. With or without bokashi it’s super valuable. So let’s see whereContinue reading “Banana tree mulch”
A village with NO plastic
The Bokashi Myanmar team is just back from an impromptu road trip to a village some hours out of Mandalay, it was a total pleasure to be there and take part in their Thingyan. Love the kids! The back story is that Diana met Ashin Sopaka in Germany last year and they got talking. TheyContinue reading “A village with NO plastic”
