What is bokashi?

Bokashi is a great way of making rich, living soil out of everyday food waste. There are other types of bokashi used in other applications auch as agriculture, it’s a broad concept. But it always involves EM microbes, fermentation and organic material.
Our focus here in this community is on food and organic waste from households, restaurants and markets.
When this type of organic material is layered with EM bokashi bran in an airtight bucket or barrel it ferments in a couple of weeks. There are no issues with smell or hygiene and you can do this indoors if you wish.
The fermented material is then dug down straight into the ground or a planting container where it is rapidly transformed into soil.
Ideal for planting, or for later use as a humus-rich organic fertiliser.

Why is bokashi so important?

We have two types of ”trash” in the world, organic and non-organic, and in Myanmar these are typically mixed and sent to landfill. Clearly, all non-organic materials such as plastics, metals, paper, glass etc should be collected and recycled, but currently there is no clear solution for organic waste. Anything that has come from the soil should be returned to the soil if the equation is going to hold, and bokashi is a good way of making that happen.

In Yangon, the soil is typically sandy and low in nutrients; often it has been badly treated with chemicals. The way to build a good soil for agriculture, urban or otherwise, is to increase the carbon content (humus), and this is done by adding organic matter.

What is EM?

EM is a people-friendly and environmentally safe product of EMRO (EM Research Organization) that achieves synergistic effects by combining beneficial microorganisms which exist in nature, such as lactic acid bacteria, yeast and phototrophic bacteria. It was developed by Professor Teruo Higa in 1982. EM activates local and native microorganisms that live in soil and water and maximizes their natural power.
EM brand represents a line of microbial products that are used in numerous fields including agriculture, animal husbandry, environmental purification and health care in more than 100 countries around the world.
EM is a trademark and a brand name owned by EMRO, and is used on a variety of products.

How EM works

Lactic acid bacteria, yeast and phototrophic bacteria contained in EM-1 have the ability to ferment organic substances. Compost fermented and decomposed by EM is broken down in the soil and absorbed by plants. Also, EM contains many useful components to promote plant growth.
