Bokashi checkup at Chu Chu

(ေအာက္မွာျမန္မာလိုပါေသးတယ္ေနာ္ )

Three or four weeks ago we were out at Chu Chu, an entrepreneurial design and recycling business on the “other side” of Yangon, on a sandy lane in Dala. They have already started cleaning up plastic waste from the street and next step is to sort the organics and use it to make soil outside the shop of the neighbors to use in their gardens. We started off the first barrel with food waste from some neighbors and a bunch of old flowers and leaves, people kept turning up with stuff to add.So, Inda went out this weekend to see how it was going and while the barrel was fermenting nicely, he had to do some quick fix work to remove plastic bags, shampoo sachets and a few other non-organics from the mix. We’re learning what communication we need to make this work, so it’s a good hands-on experience for us.
Next step will be to make a garden bed/soil factory on that little patch of sandy soil on the roadside. We’re thinking of layering the bokashi with a layer of sand/silt dredged from the nearby river; there just isn’t a lot of soil to be had in nearby gardens. We’ll set it up in a raised bed (using recycled car tires probably) and cover it over with some shade cloth or a tarp to protect against wandering cows, goats and kids. In a couple of weeks the bokashi should be largely converted to soil and we can then add another batch, building the soil bit by bit.
It’s a small and seemingly insignificant project, but this is the way we mean to start. Testing and learning, finding what works and what doesn’t, learning how to communicate with neighbors in the best possible way. So that when it gets going, as it will, it will be easy to roll this out to many other village streets.
That’s our plan. We’ll keep you informed….🙂

Adding food waste to a barrel isn’t really such a big deal, but there’s a first time for everything and we’re discussing what should go in and what shouldn’t.

Food waste just isn’t glamorous, but it’s what we do so we think it’s cool. This will become great soil in a few weeks. Amazing. And so badly needed.
