Today Stefi arrived! Our team is gathering up and we’re really excited. More meetings planned this week in Yangon and next week we’re off to Mandalay where our fifth team member will join us. Film from a rooftop
We’re filming here today! Diana is a filmmaker and is putting together an introductory film for us to tell our story and help kickstart out project. Her biggest challenge is probably to keep us serious for long enough to interview us 😉. But this will be good! /Jenny #bokashimyanmar #bokashifilm #recyclingfoodwaste
A tree with a garden!
A tree with a garden! So unusual to see here in this city of cement that we stopped and took a photo. It’s protected with a net and someone is looking after it with love. The soil is nothing special; I’d love to being them a sack of our bokashi soil when we get itContinue reading “A tree with a garden!”
Blue barrels. Yay!
Finally! We found our blue barrels! Turns out if you go down to downtown Yangon somewhere near Chinatown and the big food markets, there’s a street where they just sell plastic stuff. (Other streets specialise in printing, dentistry, electonics, glasses or motor parts, just depends what you’re interested in). So we got a good quoteContinue reading “Blue barrels. Yay!”
FarmBiz Myanmar
FarmBiz Myanmar! A very surprising urban farm in the posher of the Yangon suburbs. This is like a showcase for what can be done with an organic garden on a standard block of land. It’s a new farm and their idea is to inspire others, show what can be done, and create a base forContinue reading “FarmBiz Myanmar”
Sourcing EM
One of the more important questions on our list is source of supply, EM-1 in particular. It’s actually made locally in Myanmar in conjunction with EM experts from EMRO Japan, and because the manufacturing company believes it’s a good thing for the country, it’s sold at a very affordable price. We need it obviously toContinue reading “Sourcing EM”
Collecting trash
Collecting trash amidst the hustle and bustle of downtown Yangon. Obviously it doesn’t make a big difference in the great scheme of things, but it’s surprisingly how quickly a street can be cleaned up. So maybe it does make a difference after all? Next time we want to add some bokashi buckets to the toolContinue reading “Collecting trash”
Clean Yangon, Green Yangon
Today we were trash heroes! We joined up with a group and picked up bits and pieces of rubbish off the street — it wasn’t for that long, but we managed to get really hot and sweaty and fill a fair few bags between us. Given the amount of plastic floating round this city, it’sContinue reading “Clean Yangon, Green Yangon”
Business meeting
Look! We’re all wearing white shirts, so businesslike of us😉. Here we’re so happy to have discovered Singaporean accountant Everitt and finally get some clarity into how we should run our project. NGO, company, or social enterprise? Local, foreign or joint venture? Taxes: when, where and how much. Corruption: ditto. We’re out of the fogContinue reading “Business meeting”
Recycling kids
These gorgeous kids are doing a great job collecting plastic bottles off the street. They take them by the sack to a depot nearby where they get paid; it’s probably a valuable contribution to their family economy. Soft plastic bags have no value so they stay on the street, but in some way there isContinue reading “Recycling kids”
